I decided to release THE SURFER as an ebook, so I needed a cover. Then I went a little crazy with Photoshop. Five covers (plus a Bonus cover) emerged from the layering, rasteurizing, and the gaussian blur. How to pick one? As a market test/experiment in radical democracy/outreach to my Friends and Followers, I offer this Selection Poll. You will find it below Jacket#5, and you may vote for your favorite two jackets. The poll closes on 2/14/11.
Thank you for your participation and your comradery, my friends.
Jacket#4
So, how did you vote? Why? How do you feel about book jackets in general, and these in particular? LEAVE A COMMENT. DON’T HOLD IT IN. LIFE IS SHORT.

Cover #4 is by far the most attractive. The others are a little–sorry–cheesy. However, cover #4 does not suggest action or suspense. Maybe you could add some blood to the rocks.
Thanks for your input Pat. Generally, my art involves color, visual impact and tends to be unconventional. It might involve humor. One thing I’m learning about book covers is that many people have fairly strict expectations of cover art: mainly, that they be muted and simple. Covers have the job of representing written work and suggesting some mystery, so it makes sense. But is action or suspense actually verboten on a book cover? This seems too restrictive.

I LOVE 1 through 4 and fabulous bonus cover, hilarious. They have the perfect nostalgic kitsch, they parody the cheesy. Number 5 not so much, not as subtle as the others. If I had to pick one I’d say #4 as well; it’s beautiful and I love that it doesn’t have a surfer in it. Great designs!
You totally got it. I value your opinion Steph, as an artist in your own right.
